Product Description
Chemical formula WC. It is a black hexagonal crystal with metallic luster, hardness close to that of diamond, and is a good conductor of electricity and heat. Melting point 2870℃, boiling point 6000℃, relative density 15.63 (18℃). Tungsten carbide is insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid, and sulfuric acid, but easily soluble in a mixed acid of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. Pure tungsten carbide is brittle, but adding a small amount of metals like titanium and cobalt can reduce brittleness. It is used as a cutting tool for steel, often mixed with titanium carbide, tantalum carbide, or their mixtures to improve explosion resistance. Tungsten carbide has stable chemical properties.
In tungsten carbide, carbon atoms are embedded in the gaps of the tungsten metal lattice without destroying the original metal lattice, forming an interstitial solid solution, hence also called an interstitial (or insertion) compound. Tungsten carbide can be produced by high-temperature heating of a mixture of tungsten and carbon, with the presence of hydrogen or hydrocarbons accelerating the reaction. If tungsten-containing oxides are used for preparation, the product must undergo vacuum treatment at 1500℃ to remove carbon oxides. Tungsten carbide is suitable for machining at high temperatures and can be made into cutting tools, kiln structural materials, jet engine components, gas turbines, nozzles, etc.
